May 2008 PhotoCrawl

Join us for the May PhotoCrawl event at Celebration Park
along the Snake River south of Melba.

Saturday, May 17

4pm - 9pm +
(start at 4pm or earlier for those who want to picnic, 5pm PhotoCrawl start)

5000 Victory Lane
Melba, Idaho
http://www.canyoncounty.org/parks (includes map)
208-495-2745 (park phone)
Park admission: $2.00
Camping: $3.00

Celebration Park is Idaho's only archaeological park. Established in 1989, the park contains thousands of petroglyphs carved by early Native Americans into the melon gravel boulders deposited in the area about 15,000 years ago during the Bonneville flood.

There is a new interpretive center, the park is on the western edge of the Snake River Birds of Prey Area, and upriver a mile or so is the historic Guffey Bridge, built in 1897 to carry ore from Silver City to Nampa. There are historic stone cabins used by early miners and residents of the area and the basalt cliffs tower above the river. There should be some flowering plants in bloom, the grasses green, and there are lizards and other wildlife to see and photograph amongst the rocks.

Sunset on May 17 is at 9:06pm, with civil twilight ending at 9:39pm. Moonrise (95% full) is at 7:17pm, and the azimuth is 115 degrees. Camping is available for those of you wanting to stay for late night photography.

If you'd like to meet at the park at 4pm or earlier for a picnic/cookout (bring your own) we can have a meal before we head out - there are no restaurants nearby.

Equipment and other recommendations:
You'll want to bring water and light hiking gear; sturdy boots, a light wind/rain jacket, a hat and sunscreen. For camera gear, a tripod, telephoto, macro and/or wide angle lenses, graduated neutral density filter (+2 or +3), flash, or whatever other gear you'd like to bring. Expect to hike on relatively flat ground up to 2 miles or more one way. Because this is an afternoon/evening event it would be a good idea to bring a flashlight/headlamp in case you get caught out after dark.

A map is available at the link at the top of this notice. A new road was built to the park last year and it makes access a lot easier.

If you have any questions, let me know. president@idahophotographicworkshop.org or 208.466.9340
The next PhotoCrawl will be in July.

Digital Classroom - coming soon!
We are in negotiations and planning to develop several workshops on digital photography using a local classroom facility. This is an exciting development that has been in the works for several months. There are opportunities for 1⁄2 day, full day and multi-day workshops on Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture, Painter, and the various specific aspects of each. It gives IPW a great opportunity to provide greater educational resources to its members and to the local and regional photographer community. Stay tuned for more details as we get them.

The management is ready to give us a new group show with reception and postcard announcements. Please e-mail Diane (dronayne@cableone.net) or tell Allan Ansell or Keith Walklet at the meeting Thursday if you are interested in being part of it. To have your name on the show postcard, you must let us know by March 23 if you will be showing work. The reception and show opening will be in mid-April or early May.

The Garden City Library will feature a different community artist each month. We are looking for a cross-section of creative mediums. There is no price for admission to the exhibits. Information, Inspiration and the occasional kick in the ass. http://www.artbizblog.com/ Some of us are on Alyson Stanfield's ArtBiz Coach email list. Now she has a blog as well as a newsletter. If you're at all interested in selling your work (or think you might be someday), she has valuable advice to offer. Here's a sample:
What do you have in mind for your art business in 2006?  I'm not talking about the little things you have to do. Or even the medium-sized tasks and events you must tackle on the road to success. I'm talking about the big stuff. Big, hairy, audacious goals--or BHAGs, as they've been called -- are career-changing steps. They get you out of your comfort zone by forcing you to put yourself on the line, increase your knowledge, expand your creativity, and improve your level of excellence. So, what are your BHAGs for 2006?

INFO ON DIGITAL STUFF
If you’ve ever tried to answer someone’s questions (or your own) about digital terminology (“What’s a pixel?”) or equipment, check out http://www.geeks.com/pix/techtips.htm. The two most recent tech tips are on terminology and digital accessories. Earlier tips might be of interest, too.

SLIDES FROM DIGITAL FILES – ONLINE SOURCE
Mike Shipman sent this info to share with you: “Here is a link to an online source for getting slides made from digital files. I haven't used them yet, but what I've read has been positive. Their rates are pretty reasonable also, $2.50 for the 1st original, $2 for the first duplicate of the same image, $1.50 for 2nd duplicate, and $1 for each additional dupe. The place is www.slides.com.

The International Photography Guide at http://www.photoeye.com will be the most complete resource for fine-art photography on the web. It will include listings of educators, critics, curators, historians, equipment, suppliers, services, festivals, symposiums, museums, galleries, grants, awards, fellowships, residencies, organizations, associations, periodicals, publishers, schools, universities, workshops, and much more! We believe it will become the most useful online resource for fine-art photography.

West Coast Imaging has an informative web sitewestcoastimaging.com, (info@westcoastimaging.com) and will add you to its list-serve to get more tips.
