Outstanding New Meeting Location !!! Outstanding Turnout, Outstanding Photography

Simply Outstanding

The IPW May meeting was held in our new location at the visitors center of M-K Nature Center. The auditorium was well illuminated during Cal Werry’s  enlightening Tips in Ten that covered the history of flash photography. Keith Walklet followed with the evenings program covering an introduction to the web based tutorial heaven Lynda.com.

Attendance at our new location was outstanding. Members spread the word and the turnout included almost one new face for each familiar face.

The highlight of the evening was the sharing and critic of photos from the members. The amazing images share ranged from industrial locations including a coal processing plant and grain elevators to brilliant landscapes and grand architectural interiors to black and white figure photography. We knew we were viewing something quite special when Allan Ansell laid out 6 metal panels into a mosaic of a female nude. Allan explained that the photo mosaic was entered in the upcoming Wallowa Valley Arts Festival in Joseph, Oregon on June 4,5, and 6. And I am pleased to report that one of Allan’s photos took home the top prize of $500. Congratulations Allan and thank you for allowing us see it first.

EXTRA EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT. IPW CHANGES MEETING VENUE

GOOD TIMES EXPECTED!  (Root-e-toot-News: Special to the IPW NEWS)

In a surprisingly rapid process of decision making the IPW Board of Directors approved a proposal to relocate its monthly membership meeting to an out of the ordinary location.

Board member Mary Stieglitz spearheaded the move after she learned that the new setting, the MK Nature Center was available at a very reasonable cost. She quickly mobilized the IPW electronic communications network (IPWECN) to inform the Board of the opportunity. A majority of Board members were able to respond quickly and decisively in favor of the repositioning.

The Center supports all the facilities IPW needs, including computer access, projectors and a nicely appointed meeting room. The beautifully landscaped nature center and education facility offers the extra bonus of providing substantial opportunities for outdoor meetings and demonstrations during the summer months.

Meetings will continue to be scheduled for the third Thursday of the month between 7:00 and 9:00 P.M..  However, the meeting room will be open at 6:30 to allow set up time for presentations. Board member Keith Walklet, reportedly exclaimed, “hot-diggity-doggy, someone else’s projector gets to be used” when he learned of the news.

The Board is grateful to the managers of Meadow Lark Village for the generous use of their facilities over the past year.

Beginning with the May 2010 Meeting the IPW will be meeting in the visitors center at the MK Nature Center located at 600 South Walnut Boise, Idaho 83712. The MK Nature Center is located behind the Idaho Fish and Game Headquarters building on Walnut Street and is not obvious from the road.

From Interstate 84:

  1. Take the US-20/US-26/BROADWAY AVE exit, exit number 54.
  2. Turn NORTH onto US-20 W/US-26 W/BROADWAY AVE.
  3. Turn EAST onto PARK BLVD.
  4. Take PARK BLVD to WALNUT ST. (Be sure to be in the second lane from the left because this is the only lane that will allow you to stay on PARK BLVD).
  5. Turn SOUTH on WALNUT ST and look for MK Nature Center signs.

Tips in Ten!

darkroom_timer

With Allan Ansell manning a vintage darkroom timer, TIPS IN TEN premiered at the January IPW monthly meeting. Gay Bauwens covered The Elements of Art and Principles of Design for more effective Photography, in under ten minutes!  Amazing she could even get the title in under ten minutes, but she covered it all with time to spare for questions. Her pithy presentation gave a broad brush look at the foundation of all art, as it applies to photography.

Wish you were there? We’re looking at getting the summary of presentations posted here after each meeting.
